BROOKLYN (WPIX)—A Brooklyn teen accused of robbing a wheelchair-bound woman was in police custody Thursday after his own mother tipped off police of his whereabouts.
According to police, 18-year-old Cody Santiago was captured on surveillance tape snatching the purse of a 76-year-old woman while she sat in her wheelchair on the corner of Wyckoff Ave. and Bleecker St. on at around 1 p.m. on July 20.
Cody's mother reportedly recognized the man in the video as being her own son and immediately confronted him about it.
"I said, 'Cody, why did you do that?'" his mother, who did not want her identity revealed, told the New York Daily News. "She's an old lady."
Santiago was quick to deny the allegations, even as his family urged him to turn himself in. The teen instead packed a bag and fled the home.
Santiago was eventually arrested when he returned to the home where police officers were waiting for him.
The teen was being questioned by police Thursday. Charges are still pending.
Victim Catalina Mateo, who was robbed of only $15 and her blood pressure monitor, did not suffer any injuries in the robbery. She says she is still shaken up by the incident.
