BRENTWOOD, N.Y (WPIX) -- A man on Long Island is under arrest for assault after Suffolk County police say he beat his girlfriend's 7-year-old son so brutally he couldn't even breathe.

Police responded to a call at a Brentwood home Friday night and found Jordan Moore having trouble breathing. The boy had been home during the day and was apparently being watched by his mother's boyfriend, 32-year-old Louise Rivera. The assault reportedly took place in the evening around 5:40 p.m.

The child was rushed to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore where doctors determined the child had suffered "substantial internal injuries." He was then admitted to Stony Brook University Medical Center where he is reportedly clinging to life with the help of a respirator.

Rivera confessed to beating the boy and has been charged with assault and is being held on $2 million bond, according to authorities.
