Mickey was born in Illinois with Down Syndrome and 3 holes in her heart. Around 9 months of age, it was determined that surgery needed to be done soon. Mickey's parents had to move their family of 3 back to Indiana where they grew up so she could have heart surgery at Riley. On March 31, 1998, Micky had open heart surgery to repair the 3 holes. The largest hole was almost the size of a dime. She recovered wonderfully and began to grow and thrive after surgery.
When Mickey was 7 years old, whe was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. She went through 26 months of chemotherapy. During treatment she had 4 bone marrow aspirations, 20 spinal taps, multiple blood and platelet transfusions, spent 30 nights at Riley and took over 3,000 pills. She finished treatment on February 1, 2007 and on February 1 2012 she was considered cured.
Nine months after she finished her leukemia treatement she spent almost a month at Riley with atypical pneumonia, spending 3 nights in teh ICU due to her oxygen requirements.
Note from Mickey's mother: One night while Mickey was inpatient with a fever and low blood counts and was feeling awful, I woke up to find a doctor crouched down at the foot of her bed, resting his chin on his arms on the foot rail, watching her closely. I felt such a sense of peace knowing that he cared enough to watch over her while I was getting some much needed rest.
