LITCHFIELD, Ill.—A woman was killed and several others were injured after a double-decker Megabus traveling from Chicago slammed into a concrete overpass support Thursday afternoon.
It happened at about 1:20 p.m. just north of Litchfield. The bus, with more than 70 passengers on board, was traveling southbound on I-55 en route to Kansas City, Missouri, when the driver lost control.
Several passengers had to be cut out of the wreck, including Avhad. At least 33 people were transported to nearby hospitals.
State Police said it appears that a tire blow-out caused the driver to veer off the road, but an investigation is ongoing.
In a statement, Megabus said that the bus had passed a full maintenance check just a week prior to the accident.
Illinois State Police have advised family members to contact ISP District 18 Headquarters at (217) 324-4900, Ext 0.
