NEW ORLEANS—The Super Bowl champion Saints self destructed in the desert Sunday.
Arizona scored twice defensively and scored another touchdown on a 2 yard drive as the Cardinals beat the Saints 30-20 in Arizona Sunday. Head coach Sean Payton said after the loss, "It is not a crisis. We just have to play better."
Drew Brees threw three interceptions
A second quarter Brees pass out of the Saints end zone squirted off the hands of running back Ladell Betts and into the hands of the Cards' Paris Lenon. Lenon returned the ball 2 yards to the Saints two yard line. Three plays later, on third down and goal from the one, Arizona rookie quarterback Max Hall was hit and fumbled and he tried to run to the goal line. But, Arizona offensive tackle Levi Brown scooped up the loose and ball and stumbled into the end zone from two yards out.
The Cardinals scored a pair of defensive touchdowns. Kerry Rhodes returned a Betts fumble 27 yards and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie scored on a 28 yard interception return of a Brees pass late in the fourth quarter.
Saints kicker John Carney also missed a 29 yard field goal wide left late in the third quarter.
The Saints fell to 3-2 despite allowing Arizona only 12 first downs and 194 total yards.
