Saints first round pick Malcolm Jenkins was a holdout as training camp kicked off for the Saints Thursday.

General Manager Mickey Loomis said he's had only one discussion with Jenkins' agent, and that was last week. Added Loomis, "I would say there is no progress with Malcolm, and I am very pessimistic in terms of having anything done with him in the near future."

Jenkins, a cornerback from Ohio State, was the 14th pick overall in the draft.

Other Saints notes: head coach Sean Payton said he waived long snapper Rob Ninkovich. Cutting Ninkovich and waiving fullback Darian Barnes last week freed up two roster spots for draft picks safety Chip Vaughn (4th round) and punter Thomas Morstead (5th round).

Both signed their contracts and took part in conditioning drills Thursday.

Payton said the film tax credit fiasco isn't the reason he waived veteran long snapper Kevin Houser on June 29th. Payton said of the switch from Houser to free agent Jason Kyle, "we felt with Kyle we were getting a guy with more velocity and had better consistency from a location standpoint."

Two Saints will start camp on physically unable to perform: they are wide receiver Adrian Arrington (hamstring) and wide receiver Lance Moore (shoulder). Both will be held out of team work.

Payton said starting middle linebacker Jonathan Vilma had "not a full sports hernia". Vilma had an abdomen scope. The Saints will monitor Vilma's progress.
