The ULL Ragin Cajuns are contenders for the Sun Belt Conference football championship.

So, says the league's coaches who picked the Cajuns 3rd in their preseason poll.

Florida International was picked to win the league title with 92 points. Arkansas State was second with 85 points.

UL-Lafayette was third with 81 points.

The Cajuns are coming off a banner year. In 2011, UL Lafayette won 9 games and earned their first bowl bid in 41 years. The Cajuns then beat San Diego State 32-30 in the New Orleans Bowl.

Cajuns head coach Mark Hudspeth says last year, is well .. last year.

"Just like I told my team when I took the job," said Hudspeth. "What we did last year had no relationship to what we are doing this coming year."

The Cajuns return quarterback Blaine Gauthier of Lutcher for his senior season. In 2011, Gauthier threw 17 touchdown passes in his last 7 games. He was named the state of Louisiana's Offensive Player of the year.

Arkansas State quarterback Ryan Aplin was selected as preseason offensive player of the year.

Florida International defensive lineman Tourek Williams was named preseason defensive player of the year.
