On November 1st through the 6th, 5 difference churches will host memorials to honor children killed by violence. 263 children were killed by violence in Chicago in the last three school years. Urban Dolorosa is a collaboration of churches, faith communities, and artists coming together to remember the children who have died and to call the city to support community-based anti-violence efforts.
Join us to remember these children with poetry, music, song, and youth performances at one of our memorial events:
Hyde Park Union Church, 5600 S. Woodlawn
This is an unprecedented artistic collaboration across neighborhoods, cultures, artistic media, and generations. The events will feature original sacred music by South African composer Vaughn Fayle, libretto (lyrics) by Susan Johnson, poetry by Mama Brenda Matthews, soprano Jade Maze, baritone Khary Laurent, Johnson College Prep Choral Program, Youth Choir and Marimba Ensemble from Holy Cross/IHM, North Park University Chamber Soloists, the Chicago Community Chorus, and photography from Carlos Javier Ortiz, with artistic direction from Steppenwolf for Young Adults.
