Showers and possible thunderstorms were moving into the region Friday afternoon, but severe weather was forecast to stay south of Maryland. A tornado watch was issued until 9 p.m. for much of eastern Virginia and North Carolina, but forecasters at the Storm Prediction Center said they do not expect to issue any severe weather watches in Maryland. Strong storms are possible, though, with some capable of producing locally damaging wind gusts and hail.
