Cathedral Choral Society High School Festival

This is their fifth year of bringing together young people from public, charter and independent schools.

Schedule for Wednesday, February 24th is:

1:30 - 2:45: Sectional Rehearsals, at St. Alban's Church (next to the Cathedral, on Wisconsin Avenue)

Boys: Nourse Hall

Girls: Nave (or Saterlee Hall) very nearby

2:45 - break and walk to the Cathedral - DCYOP players arrive

Orchestra members arrive; go to Cathedral Nave Crossing

3:00 - 4:10 - Massed Choirs in the Cathedral Nave Crossing; Haydn piece with orchestra, Gregg Smith canon

4:10 - 5:15 - Individual choirs run-through of pieces, as desired (less than 10 minutes each)

5:00 - 6:25 - Break and supper, buffet at NCS, and robe or dress

5:30 - 6:15 - Cathedral evensong: SILENCE

6:30 - All singers and players in the Cathedral in place and on risers, dressed/robed, for final notes and warm-up

7:00 - CONCERT (about 80 minutes - all done before 8:30)

The first part of the concert is individual choirs' performances - then all 300 singers perform together, pieces selected by Ben Hutto, festival director.

With the theme "Nature and Nature's God," the massed choirs will sing:

"Now I Walk in Beauty" by Gregg Smith

"This We Know" by Ron Jeffers (a setting of words of Chief Seattle) - women's voices

"The Pasture" by Randall Thompson (a setting of Robert Frost's poem) - men's voices

"The Heavens Declare" by Haydn (from "Creation") - all, with orchestra
