Republican George Allen brought his campaign for the U.S. Senate to Botetourt County Wednesday. He outlined a three-part plan he says will help businesses create jobs, save taxpayers' money and protect workers rights.
Allen unveiled his "Freedom to Work" agenda during a visit to Dynax America Corporation.
The plan includes a strong defense of Virginia's right to work law, and limits on the power of labor unions .
"Companies ought to move where they want," Allen told News7 in an interview. "The taxpayers ought to get their bang for the buck with competitive bidding on government projects and we ought to protect the liberty of working men and women not forcing them to join a union against their will."
In response, Democrats said Allen helped create the nation's economic crisis during his six years in the Senate. A spokesperson for Democratic Senate Candidate Tim Kaine said Allen voted for legislation that increased the national debt by three trillion dollars, supported tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans and voted against increases in the minimum wage.Follwing is a statement from Kaine for Virginia spokeswoman Brandi Hoffine:
"George Allen told voters all they need to know about his approach to 'worker freedom' when he saddled this country with more than $3 trillion in debt, championed unfunded tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans that helped create our deficit problem, and voted against raising the minimum wage while voting to increase his own salary as a Senator.
“Governor Kaine believes real worker freedom is a payroll tax cut for the middle class and small businesses, which George Allen opposes. Governor Kaine believes real worker freedom is protecting Social Security and Medicare so that people who've worked hard all their lives can have a dignified retirement, which George Allen opposes. And, Governor Kaine believes real worker freedom is a serious plan to create jobs for struggling Americans, which George Allen doesn't have."
