In a game that had Dogwood District title implications, Gretna butted heads with Dan River on Friday night. And how about this for a backdrop - the defending state champion Hawks have had a share of the district title in three of the last five years, while Dan River has yet to taste a district title since joining the league back in 2007.
Let's start in the first quarter. Gretna's Jason Canares punted the ball to Dan River's Malcom Ware. And that ended up being a bad decision. Ware ran with a purpose. He took it to the house for an 85-yard return. The extra point was blocked. Dan River up 13-7.
How about some defense. Grenta's Dyon Rosser busted through the defense and got tripped up. He coughed up the rock and its recovered by Dan River.
But Rosser is going to make up for it with some defense of his own. Later in the second. Wildcats at their own 5 yard line, Brian Cook heaved it deep but Rosser picks it off and is down near the 50 yard line.
That sets this up perfectly. Rosser throwing long to Will Lilly near the 15 yard line, and he does the rest, taking it in for six on the 40-yard touchdown. That put the Hawks up by one at halftime.
But Dan River came back to get the 27-22 win.
