1. Agencies aim to restore bay's depleted oysters, a creek at a time

It's planting time in the Chesapeake Bay, just as it is on land for farmers and gardeners across Maryland.

  5. Tubman getting much-deserved honor

We commend President Barack Obama for designating the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Monument ("A monument to Md. abolitionist," March 26). Just days after the centennial of her death, Harriet Tubman is finally receiving the national recognition she deserves as a heroic conductor on the Underground Railroad and an early leader for women's rights.

  7. Honoring Harriet Tubman

President Barack Obama's designation Monday of a new national monument to Harriet Tubman, who escaped slavery on a Dorchester County plantation in 1849, then helped guide scores of other slaves to freedom in the North during the decade before the Civil War, honors a small and unprepossessing African-American woman who played an outsized role in American history.

  17. National Archery in the Schools Program hits the target

John Leck will never forget the look on the face of the paralyzed boy sitting in his wheelchair. When the arrow left the bow that had been strapped onto the eighth-grader's arm, a mixture of wonder and excitement was apparent as he watched it sail toward the target inside the gymnasium at Rocky Hill Middle School in Clarksburg.

  19. Story of Laurel's first bank robbery has interesting conclusion [Commentary]

I read with great interest your article Jan. 31 about Laurel's first bank robbery by John Morgan. Sadly, this was not our last bank robbery and just as sadly, not the last 19-year-old to go to prison from our county. A quick review by the state archivist, Dr. Edwin Papenfuse, brings us the "rest of the story." (By the way, if every part of government was as efficient or accommodating as the state archives, there would not be much to complain about.)

  21. Is the Bay Foundation ignoring the threat behind the Conowingo Dam?

Why does the Chesapeake Bay Foundation refuse to take seriously the threat posed by the Conowingo Dam's inability to hold back Susquehanna River pollution? With respect to the effect of Susquehanna River pollutants, the bay foundation has taken an inexplicable U-turn in its long-held doctrine regarding pollutants and the Chesapeake.

  23. Two unheralded heroes of the bay

I got a nice award recently — for environmental leadership, the inscription read — really, for just doing work I was paid for and that I often confused with fun.
