Federal Hill (or just Fed Hill, if you like), is idyllic for families, teenagers, the college crowd and young professionals. Older people find it appealing, too, with its simple and inviting pleasures independent of the hustle and bustle of nearby downtown. A stroll through the park is relaxing and offers an attractive view of Baltimore's skyline and maritime vistas. However, if something more invigorating is your style, there is a potpourri of bars and restaurants on Charles and Light streets suitable for every wallet and palate. A stroll through the park is relaxing and offers an attractive view of Baltimore's skyline and maritime vistas. Hearing live music at any number of taverns is a popular Federal Hill pastime, as is attending one of the several street fairs happening throughout the year. The very active and tight-knit neighborhood association keeps residents and visitors occupied with events and gatherings on a regular basis. The neighborhood is a perfect example of urban renewal and modern gentrification. Polished rowhouses primarily made of old-fashioned brick stand next to more contemporary dwellings, some of them rehabbed from existing structures and others built from scratch over the last few decades. Case in point is the Cross Street Market; once a 19th century marketplace, its recent makeover reaffirms its place as the neighborhood's social and commercial core.

Another idea to save the a-rabs: Broaden their appeal
As stated here previously, I support a new deal for the a-rabs of Baltimore, so that this tradition of horse- and pony-drawn street vendors continues as part of the urban food-delivery system and as a tourist delight. Others think it's a failed business...Tags: Economic Policy, Colleges and Universities, Obesity, Marketing

Guidelines against self-exams for breast cancer ignite firestorm
Mary Ivey didn't have a family history of breast cancer or a genetic mutation putting her at high risk for the disease. At 37, she was too young for an annual mammogram. But one day in March, she did a routine self-exam, as her doctor had instructed her,...Tags: Cancer, Death and Dying, Hospitals and Clinics, Colleges and Universities, Celebrities and Health Issues

City Hall awaits verdict on Dixon
Ask employees how life has been in City Hall for the past two weeks and most will say: "It's business as usual." Officials have reviewed plans for a proposed slots complex, discussed how to keep the poor warm this winter and voted on new rules for crisis...Tags: Regional Authority, Restaurant and Catering Industry, Trials, Sheila Dixon, Cafe Hon

Downsizing isn't easy in tough market
Bob Kean really likes the Roland Park house he carefully restored. But now - as he searches for a job to replace the one he lost - five bedrooms and 4,200 square feet strike him as a luxury he can't afford.
His plan: Sell and move into a much smaller...Tags: Apartments, Rentals, Clubs and Associations, Family, Real Estate Agents

Monday Afternoon Quarterbacking: The Reserve
Dining@LargeMy review of the Reserve in -- to avoid a neighborhood argument I'll call it the Federal Hill area -- appeared in yesterday's paper. Federal Hill is one of those places where I would expect upscale little wine bars and......Tags: Wine, Beer, and Spirits, Dining and Drinking

Top 10 Fine-Dining Bars
Dining@LargeThis week's topic, Top 10 Fine-Dining Bars, intrigues me because they seem to me to be a peculiarly Baltimore institution. They aren't bistros. They aren't wine bars. The decor isn't stylish -- in fact, you can't even describe it as......Tags: Salads, Mount Vernon, Restaurants, Fells Point, Wine, Beer, and Spirits

Top 10 Restaurant Pig-Outs
Dining@LargeWhen I posted an earlier entry on heart attacks on a plate, I didn't think I would get a Top 10 out of it. But sure enough, all of you came through. I had more than enough ammunition for a......Tags: Brunch, Restaurants, Heart Attack, Steaks, Wine, Beer, and Spirits

Lean times, rich dishes
If dining out has a season, it would be around the holidays. If there's a time when Baltimoreans will be saying, to heck with the recession, let's have an office lunch, get together with old friends at a nice restaurant or celebrate by dining out, it will...Tags: Brewers Hill, Restaurants, Wine, Beer, and Spirits, Johns Hopkins University, Dining and Drinking

Elizabeth Large's top 10
This week's topic on Dining@Large (baltimoresun.com/diningatlarge), Top 10 Fine-Dining Bars, intrigues me because they seem to me to be a peculiarly Baltimore institution. They aren't bistros. Next Sunday's review: The Reserve

Cafe Hon and the pink flamingo
Dining@LargeI feel like I should weigh in on the Cafe Hon Pink Flamingo Issue, but I'm hesitant to do so. Cafe Hon's owner, Denise Whiting, has received a letter from the city saying that she has to have a minor......Tags: Restaurants, Dining and Drinking, Cafe Hon
