  1. Celebrate National Vanilla Milkshake Day Around New Haven!

Summer is coming. I mean, we think it's at least on its way. Spring has gotten hot enough to fake us out a couple times, but it's June and we're still seeing 40s on our thermometers, so no one's fooling us. But, as is typical in New England, we could end up melting for weeks straight any day now. Have you found your favorite chilly beverage to cool down with this season? One you may have overlooked, the simple vanilla milkshake, is celebrated nationally on June 20, apparently. And we were alerted to the holiday by McDonald's, of all places.

  3. Harry Connick Jr. Performs in Simsbury on June 22

You can satisfy your musical theater jones, your jazz itch and your pop-idol crush all with one concert this week: Harry Connick Jr. is performing 8 p.m. June 22 at Simsbury Meadows (22 Iron Horse Boulevard, Simsbury). Connick's a skilled pianist who can slide easily from stride to classical to swing. He's led big bands. He's starred in two Broadway revivals (<em>The Pajama Game</em> and <em>On a Clear Day You Can See Forever</em>), the 2001 TV version of <em>South Pacific</em> and was nominated for a Tony for composing the Broadway show <em>Thou Shalt Not</em>. He had millions swooning to his renditions of pop classics on the soundtrack of the romance movie classic <em>When Harry Met Sally...</em> The son of a judge and a district attorney, Connick played an Assistant D.A. in several episodes of "Law and Order: Special Victims Unit." He's also made his mark on sitcoms (as Grace's husband on "Will &amp; Grace") and suspense thrillers (as a serial killer in "Copycat").

  5. Portable Credit Card Readers Make It Easier For Small Business To Sell Their Wares

It&rsquo;s the weekend. You&rsquo;re at an outdoor fair, yukking it up with pals, eating bad food and eyeballing that handmade shawl made out of alpaca-fertilized lawn clippings (the alpacas are local). But it&rsquo;s $89, and you don&rsquo;t have that much handy.

  7. The Sale Of Municipal Assets, Like Streets And Buildings, Can Help With A Budget Gap, But Critics Think It's Unwise

Selling a city street to close a short-term municipal budget gap may seem like a strange idea. But how about a public zoo? Or a parking lot? Or maybe some taxpayer-owned art work, or park land, or a concert hall?

  9. For Three Governors, Civility And Brutal Competition

Three governors crisscrossed the state Monday, all looking to bolster their business strength, and no, there won't be a punch line here &#8212; other than the knockout that Texas Gov. Rick Perry and South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard are trying to inflict on our own Gov. Dannel P. Malloy.
