1. Record heat in L.A. - 112 at 12:45 p.m. PDT

    Maryland Weather
Sure it's gray and drippy here. And there are no palm trees anywhere. But at least we're not in Los Angeles, which is sweltering in record 112-degree heat this afternoon. They've long-since broken the daily record (106 degrees in 1963). Now......

  7. Market Watch: Nectarines and plums are ripe and ready

For two months it seemed like summer would never come for our nectarines and plums, which were delayed and somewhat less flavorful than usual. This week, the big heat finally arrived in the San Joaquin Valley, bringing an abundance of choice varieties to peak ripeness all at once. For the next two months, that area will pump out great varieties every week, if you know what to look for.

  11. Wine of the Week: 2009 Loring Wine Co. Pinot Noir 'Russian River Valley'

Brian Loring has a self-proclaimed obsession with Pinot Noir. From a workaday facility in Lompoc on the Central Coast, he makes half a dozen single-vineyard Pinot Noirs. This one, though, is a mixture of several vineyard lots and is a great argument...

  13. Culinary SOS: Heirloom Bakery and Cafe's sour cream coffeecake

Dear SOS: The coffee cake at South Pasadena's Heirloom Bakery and Cafe, near the train station, is fabulous. Each day it's flavored differently for variety ... chocolate chips, raspberry, etc. I would love to have the recipe to make at home for a treat...

  15. City walk

Usually the trajectory that neighborhoods go through as they gentrify is entirely predictable -- and more than a little depressing. First a scruffy, down-at-the-heels area welcomes a few urban pioneers drawn by an attractive and affordable housing stock. Then come the first businesses catering to those early arrivals: sneaker shops, a hole-in-the-wall coffee place or spiffed-up dive bar. Then come the piggy-back establishments and a second wave of residents, perhaps somewhat less hardy than the first. Then comes the frozen yogurt place. Then comes Starbucks and Banana Republic and the fat lady, singing.

  21. Get out and vote, Glendale

Local incumbents shy away from open debate and discussion of their record. Instead, they rely on slick four-color mailers, their party's advantage in registered voters, and a low turnout on Election Day. "We the People" govern this nation through our...
