  7. Letters: 'Bring home the troops' sounds good, but accomplishes little

The bumper sticker political view of the foreign policy of our nation expressed by Daniel Hays in last week's edition of the Towson Times is a mystery to me.  His letter to the editor ("U.S. incursions overseas put our troops in danger," March 7, 2012)...

  11. When well-educated politicians cry 'snob'

With the Republican presidential nomination contest in high gear, Marylanders might be forgiven for smiling. The word "snob" has returned with full force to presidential politics after a four-decade hiatus. Former Sen. Rick Santorum (Penn State University '80, University of Pittsburgh '81, Dickinson School of Law '86), in an old-fashioned beat-down on higher education, recently informed us that President Barack Obama is "a snob" for wanting Americans to go to college, where they would be indoctrinated by "some liberal college professor."

  21. Remembering Pearl Harbor: 'We shall win'

Seventy years ago today, Japan launched a surprise attack on America's Pacific fleet in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, drawing the United States into the second World War. More than 2,400 Americans were killed in the attack, including four Marylanders, all of whom were serving aboard the U.S.S. Arizona: Fireman 1st Class Howard T. Anderson; Boatswain's Mate 1st Class Clyde J. Rawson; Yeoman 2nd Class Jack M. Restivo; and Shipfitter 3rd Class Victor C. Tambolleo. The war that followed would take a terrible toll — including 770 from Maryland killed, 928 wounded and 18 missing in action. Americans greeted the news of the attack and of Japan's declaration of war with shock, horror and anger — but also a tremendous resolve. This is what The Sun had to say on its editorial page the next morning, Dec. 8, 1941:
