  5. Finally, somebody calls out the military budget

Steve Buff's letter in Monday's Sunpaper ("Military spending is bankrupting the country," Jan. 20) was interesting. Finally I see a letter from someone in agreement with my own views.

  9. Real questions for Hagel and Brennan

Whether Chuck Hagel and John Brennan are the ideal men to lead the Pentagon and CIA remains to be seen. We need the exercise of a through vetting in Senate confirmation hearings, and certainly an examination of the nominees' past statements and actions is warranted. But the objections raised about Mr. Hagel so far, and to a lesser extent, Mr. Brennan, sound a lot more like an attempt to score political points than an effort to get at the key questions that will face the leaders of two of the nation's most crucial agencies.

  15. Letters and maps tell history of Laurel during Civil War

Although no battles were fought in Laurel during the Civil War, the city's railroad was a strategic resource for the Union Army, numerous units of Union soldiers were stationed here and the military's presence added a different element to the city's social and cultural landscapes.

  17. U.S. must recognize Israel's control of the Golan

Straddling the divide between the chaos in Syria and the calm of the Galilee in northern Israel is a pastoral plateau known as the Golan Heights. Famous for its world-class vineyards, wandering cattle, and lush nature trails, the Golan has served as the disputed frontier between the two long-time adversaries since the aftermath of the Six-Day War in 1967.

  19. Not just a game

The spectacular playoff run that brings the Ravens to today's Super Bowl rightfully has the city literally and figuratively aglow in purple. Of course, some will assert that it is only a game, and there are far more pressing issues that should occupy the local headlines. It is true that it is just a game. And in many ways, game day is just another afternoon. But sometimes it is more than could have ever been imagined.
