5. Finalists for One Maryland One Book program

I spent part of the day at the offices of the Maryland Humanities Council, as part of the group that selects the book for the <a href="http://www.mdhc.org/programs/one-maryland-one-book/" target="_blank">One Maryland One Book reading program. (Is there anyything better than a good discussion about books?) The group of about a dozen bibliophiles reviewed nine books that had been winnowed down from a longer list, all built around this year's theme: courage and unity in a time of war.

  7. Lessons learned in Iraq, Rwanda

Letter writer Paul R. Schlitz Jr. can't seem to grasp the fact that an acknowledgment of Iraq's potential to harbor weapons of mass destruction doesn't necessarily indicate current agreement with the decision to invade, nor does it require someone to...

By "excellence," I mean being responsible for helping each student significantly develop his or her knowledge or learning capacity. This increased difficulty is not the fault of teachers. Rather, teaching now requires mastering two seemingly opposite responsibilities: developing the best and the brightest to regain America's educational standing in the world, while ensuring that each student learns the basic competencies assessed by state and federal testing — and applying them to classes increasingly diverse in a host of educational factors.

We are on the 2011 Student Freedom Riders bus rolling toward Augusta, Ga., watching "The Murder of Emmett Till," a PBS documentary on the savage 1955 lynching of a black boy in the nothing town of Money, Miss.
