A reproduction historic cannon backfired at Fort McHenry during the recent Star-Spangled Banner bicentennial celebrations, injuring a member of the cannon crew, according to the National Park Service. The breech of the cannon, or the mass of metal at the rear end of the gun, dislodged when the gun was fired last Tuesday at around 11:30 a.m. Fort McHenry's living history crew was firing the cannon to salute the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Eagle and The Pride of Baltimore II as the ships departed after the week-long celebration of the Star-Spangled Banner earlier this month.
