1. Reimer misses the mark in gun debate

Columnist Susan Reimer writes that the debate over banning assault weapons is really about race and gender ("Rage, resignation at gun control town hall," Feb. 7).

  3. We can stop guns from killing our children

The death of children at Sandy Hook Elementary captivated our attention and caused us to examine the state's view on gun control and how best to keep its citizens safe. However, the sad and startling fact is that Maryland has had its own Sandy Hook tragedy every year from 2005-2011. What was even worse: No one noticed.

  5. Obama 2.0

In his second inaugural address, President Barack Obama laid out clearly and forcefully the philosophy that animates his presidency and placed it in context of America's history and values. He believes in individual initiative and hard work, in the inalienable rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. But he believes that history has time and again forced us as a nation to recalibrate our notions of what actions are necessary to uphold those values — from the end of slavery with the Civil War to the enfranchisement of women during the Progressive Era to the dawn of the New Deal welfare state and the realization of equality through the civil rights movement. And he believes that evolution is never-ending. If he had given this speech years ago — perhaps at the dawn of the tea party movement — we might find ourselves in a very different place now.

  7. High capacity magazines mean more stray bullets

In a recent article on gun control hearings in Annapolis ("Opinions differ on Md. gun controls," Feb. 7), Sonia Mangum of Stevensville is quoted as saying, in opposition to limits of the ammunition capacity in gun magazines, "If I am under duress, I am going to be missing and may not have time to reload."

  9. Legal gun owners are not the problem

Regarding the recent column by Susan Reimer ("Rage and resignation at the gun control town hall," Feb. 7), it has got to be the worst piece of racist diatribe I have read in years.

  11. Bills to keep guns out of the hands of psychiatric patients pose risks

In December, a young man in Newtown, Conn., killed 20 small children and seven adults, including his mother, and then committed suicide. This tragic massacre has prompted legislators to reexamine firearms laws and quickly propose legislation that might prevent future mass murders. Much of it focuses on people who have sought mental health care.

  13. Keeping guns out of the wrong hands

A common refrain of those who object to new gun control laws is that authorities could do much to keep firearms out of the wrong hands and reduce violence by simply enforcing the laws that are already on the books. In the case of gun trafficking, this line of reasoning is a bit like asking why authorities don't tackle the problem of traffic safety by busting jaywalkers. Under current law, the burden of proof is too high and the penalties are too low to make it worth prosecutors' time, and so few resources are put into going after those who buy guns on behalf of people who cannot legally do so on their own.

  21. How far will gun control go?

I'm a sportsman and a hunter. Locked securely in my gun safe are hunting firearms and accessories, but not those currently mentioned in the debate over restricting military "assault" weapons, large capacity magazines and certain handguns ("Chief calls for stricter gun laws," Jan. 31)
