  1. Putin returns, and so does a Cold War mentality

Now that Vladimir Putin is Russia's president once again, the result of still another fraudulent election, we should expect ever more hostile relations with Moscow.

  5. Saluting the rapists: America's culture of silence on sex

Remember that awkward silence that fell across the nation back in '94 when Bill Clinton's surgeon general used the M-word?

To his supporters, Army Pfc. Bradley E. Manning is a hero, the whistle-blower who revealed U.S. war crimes and diplomatic double-dealing in the Pentagon records and State Department cables he is alleged to have sent to the anti-secrecy organization WikiLeaks.

  9. Ending 'Don't ask, don't tell' is about more than gays in the military

Tuesday marked the end of the Pentagon's nearly two-decade policy barring openly gay, lesbian, or bisexual people from military service. The death of "Don't ask, don't tell" is a big win for the LGBT rights community, but it may be an even bigger win for the nation's military and the communities that play host to major military installations. That's because the end of this discriminatory policy may go a long way toward dispelling the notion that there is a sharp divide between the culture of the military and that of society at large.

  11. Time to end misguided foreign wars

First I saw the headline detailing a strike on a military base ("5 U.S. soldiers killed in strike on Baghdad base," June 7) and then on the following page a warning that a decade-long conflict may needed to be extended ("Gates: Afghan job not done"). What...

  13. Foreign aid serves U.S. interests

The recent Republican presidential candidate debate in Las Vegas put a new spotlight on the issue of U.S. spending on foreign aid, although it may have escaped the notice of many ("Republicans take off gloves in Vegas debate," Oct. 19). Times are tough...

  15. A funding cut that endangers America

In a time of great political gridlock, there is at least one issue that both parties still agree on — the urgency to confront and reduce the threat posed by terrorist groups that are actively seeking nuclear weapons.

  17. Which way in Afghanistan?

With the first anniversary of the U.S. "surge" in Afghanistan coming up in August, President Barack Obama will soon have to decide whether to maintain the current force levels or begin withdrawing some of the 30,000 additional troops he ordered there last year. The surge has largely succeeded in its primary goal of breaking the Taliban's momentum, and that has given Afghan government security forces breathing room to build up their strength and effectiveness. As a result, the president now has an opportunity to fulfill his promise last year to begin reducing the size of the American presence there.

  19. We need a 'weapons BRAC'

The American defense community stands at a crossroads. The need to trim the defense budget, as Defense Secretary Robert Gates recently put it, is a "matter of simple arithmetic and political reality." Meanwhile, this year's defense authorization bill, passed by the House late last month, contains a provision that allows work to continue on the second engine for the F-35 fighter. The makers of that engine, GE and Rolls Royce, have agreed to self-fund the project. They're betting that they can round up support in Congress to bring it back to life — despite the fact that the Pentagon has previously issued a stop-work order on the project, which it says is "a waste of taxpayer money."

  21. Gates is right call out European allies on NATO
