  1. U.S. and Pakistan: Uneasy allies

News that the U.S. has resumed drone strikes in Pakistan, killing at least three suspected militants last week in the tribal areas of North Waziristan along that country's border with Afghanistan, could hardly come at a more delicate moment for U.S.-Pakistani relations. Rather than signal an improvement in ties between the two uneasy allies in the war against Islamic insurgents, it may end up pushing the two sides even further apart — or, in the worst case, precipitating a rupture.

  3. A despot lashes out

Syria's bloody crackdown on anti-government demonstrators reached new levels of brutality this week with the killing of hundreds of civilians in the city of Hama, a hotbed of resistance to the regime of President Bashar Assad. For months, Mr. Assad ignored the international community's mounting condemnation of his repressive tactics, choosing instead to hunker and unleash his security forces against unarmed civilians. He continued to lash out even after Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Kuwait — nominal allies that have been reluctant to criticize a fellow Sunni Arab leader — took the rare step last week of recalling their ambassadors from Damascus in protest.

  5. Occupy Wall Street protesters are the extremists, not the tea party

Brian Phillips is the head of communications for the NYC General Assembly, the group primarily responsible for occupying Wall Street. I learned about him while listening to National Public Radio's "Morning Edition." According to NPR, Phillips is "an ex-Marine with a bachelor's in computer science. Today he is wearing a sock on his head."

  7. Occupy Baltimore — for what?

The Occupy Baltimore protest today at the Inner Harbor, and the protests on Wall Street that inspired it and similar demonstrations around the country, are a welcome sign that outrage at the nation's political and economic system isn't confined to the political right. It isn't just conservatives who are mad about what's going on in this country, and the spreading protest movement among a markedly diverse coalition of people, fostered by a heavy reliance on social media, has the potential to add a left-leaning strain of populism that has been missing from the conversation.

  9. Why limit drone strikes against Americans to other countries?

I wasn't surprised to see that the peanut gallery on the far right has no objection to the Obama administration's use of extra-judicial murder against people it deems sufficiently anti-American (whether or not they have actually committed a crime). ("...

  11. Soviet fall and Arab Spring

Twenty years ago, tens of thousands of Russians took to the streets of Moscow, just as Egyptians, Tunisians and Syrians have this year — rejecting the old order, demanding freedom and democracy. That August, the Russian democrats prevailed because their will was greater than that of those who plotted the coup against Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev. The dynamics of the Arab Spring are strikingly similar.

  13. Colbert takes on Rand Paul over profiling comments

U.S. Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) earned a lot of respect from civil libertarians several weeks ago when he emerged as this country's foremost Fourth Amendment advocate. Rand tried single-handedly to stop some of the more authoritarian aspects of the Patriot Act from being renewed. His libertarian bona fides couldn't have been stronger.
