Criticism of patriotism unfair

In the Sept. 19 Room for Debate, conservative commentator Cal Thomas decried the lack of patriotism in contemporary America. He praised a series of booklets initiated in 1923 and liked a platitude-filled quote by Daniel Webster. Talk is cheap. Even members of the American Civil Liberties Union are patriots in that they want America to live up to its ideals. I think it is unfair to label the present generation unpatriotic when their patriotism has not been tested. Edward T. Stephenson Bethlehem
