Highlights

The Chicago Park District is one of the country's oldest park districts, overseeing more than 7,300 acres of parkland, 552 parks and 33 beaches. It is an independent taxing body that is headed by a superintendent who is appointed by the mayor of Chicago. Seven commissioners-also appointed by the mayor-manage and control the district's affairs. The district was created in 1934, consolidating nearly 22 independent park districts that ran parks across the city. Today, nine museums, two conservatories, 220 facilities and six golf courses sit on Chicago Park District land. The district is considered a "sister" agency of the City of Chicago.
