The annual pay-per-view wrestling spectacle WrestleMania is billed as "one of the world's largest annual pop culture events" and the Super Bowl of wrestling. Though the event is scripted by World Wrestling Entertainment, fans could care less. The first WrestleMania was held March 31, 1985 at Madison Square Garden with a bevy of celebrities. Liberace made his grand entrance with the Rockettes, and rocker Cyndi Lauper participated in one of the matches. The first main event featured Hulk Hogan and Mr. T against "Rowdy" Roddy Piper and Paul "Mr. Wonderful" Orndorff. The Hulk and Mr. T were victorious.
The Undertaker holds the best WrestleMania record of all-time, going 15-0. Two of the most memorable WrestleMania matches happened at WrestleMania 3, when Hulk Hogan body slammed previously unbeaten Andre the Giant to retain the WWE championship.
Then there was the brawl between Randy "Macho Man" Savage and Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat in their Intercontinental Championship match. Savage seemed to have the advantage, having seriously injured Steamboat in a match a few months earlier. But Steamboat somehow came from the brink of losing to win, giving fans memories they would never forget.
In 2007, WrestleMania 23 was held in Detroit and billed as "The Battle of the Billionaires" between Donald Trump and WWE chairman Vince McMahon. Each picked a wrestler to represent them in the ring, with the loser billionaire having his head shaved. Unfortunately for McMahon, he lost and had his head shaved on stage at Ford Field.
WrestleMania 24 will be held in Orlando on March 30, 2008, in the Citrus Bowl, just the second time in WrestleMania history that the event will take place outdoors.
