Bandbox, Ilikecandy win at Laurel Park
Bandbox and Ilikecandy won their respective races Monday at Laurel Park. Bandbox took the $250,000 General George Handicap (G3), giving the horse its first win in nearly three years. Under Xavier Perez, Bandbox, who is trained by Rodney Jenkins, completed the 7-furlong distance in 1:24.18 and won by four lengths. Monday's 10-race card was the first since last Wednesday. A powerful storm dumped 17 inches of snow and nearly an inch of ice at the Central Maryland track last week which caused Laurel officials to cancel live racing last week. The $300,000 Barbara Fritchie Handicap (G2) was postponed a week until this Saturday. "Mr. Jenkins told me this race could set up really well for us today and it turned out just like that. He broke really well and I just kept him comfortable and kept him behind everyone as long as I could. I had so much horse underneath of me," Perez said. "When we got near the top of the stretch I swung him to the outside and he just dragged me to the front." Ilikecandy, with jockey Alex Cintron, moved her record to 3-1 at Laurel Park with a seven-length victory in the $100,000 Maryland Racing Media Stakes for fillies and mares Monday afternoon. Malibu Red finished second behind Ilikecandy, who has never finished worse than second in five lifetime starts. "I wanted to get a good spot early and I was able to," Cintron said. "We stayed off the rail and out of trouble. This is a very nice filly that will get better the farther she goes. I was comfortable and confident today and when we closed at the quarter pole I was making sure she'd be ready to go farther next time."
