  • Winter Classic game vs. Chicago highlights Caps' schedule for 2014-15

    The Washington Capitals have learned their 2014-15 regular-season schedule, announced Sunday afternoon by the NHL It begins Oct. 9 versus the Montreal Canadiens at Verizon Center and includes four home contests over the first five games. The 82-game slate also features the Winter Classic at 1 p.m. Jan. 1, against the Chicago Blackhawks. The location for the annual outdoor game appears to be Nationals Park, though sources have indicated that the NHL and the Nationals organization are currently finalizing negotiations to use the stadium. After hosting the Canadiens, runners-up to the New York Rangers in the Eastern Conference last season, the Capitals briefly hit the road Oct. 11 at Boston before hosting San Jose, New Jersey and Florida in mid-October. Their longest road trip is scheduled for February, a four-game swing at San Jose (Feb. 11), Los Angeles (Feb. 14), Anaheim (Feb. 15) and Pittsburgh (Feb. 17). Washington has 16 back-to-backs, compared with 14 last season, and has a five-game home stretch in March against Minnesota (March 5), Buffalo (March 7), Rangers (March 11), Dallas (March 13) and Boston (March 15).
