From the hallowed halls of the museum to the Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Complex, the International Swimming Hall of Fame is one of South Florida's historical landmarks devoted to aquatic sports, diving, water polo and synchronized swimming. The multi-million dollar state-of-the-art complex and tourist attraction is ideally situated in the heart of Fort Lauderdale Florida's beach community within a wind gust of the Atlantic Ocean. The complex is nestled near a string of cafes and restaurants, hotels, smoothie shops and swimsuit stores, where diving, swimming, water polo and synchronize swimming teams representing the City of Fort Lauderdale work out daily with certified coaches. There are also lesson programs offered for various ability levels including beginners. The city-owned Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Complex houses two 10-lane, 50-meter Olympic pools, diving well and lessons pool. The facility is open to the public seven days a week. The facility has played host to major international and national events in all aquatic sports in addition to hosting local Florida Gold Coast, college, high school, middle school and recreational meets. Olympic gold medalist divers Greg Louganis and Fu Mingxia, and swimmers Michael Phelps, Dara Torres and Martin Zubero are just some of the world-class athletes who have competed at the complex. The aquatic complex, formerly known as the International Swimming Hall of Fame Aquatic Complex, was renamed Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Complex to have a separate identity from the ISHOF Museum, located on the same property. The museum shares property on A1A, just south of Las Olas Boulevard, with the 42-year-old aquatic center. Like the museum, the pool leases land from the city, but the two are operated separately. The Fort Lauderdale Swim Team was also renamed Fort Lauderdale Aquatics to encompass not only swimming, but water polo and synchronized swimming. The diving program remains Fort Lauderdale Diving. What started with a shoebox collection and ultimately grew into a million-dollar operation as the showcase and archives of swimming and other aquatic sports, the ISHOF Museum has had thousands of tourists and locals walk through its glass doors. The museum halls are adorned with old photographs and posters. There are display cases with swimsuits and medals of legends such as Duke Kahanamoku, Johnny Weissmuller, Buster Crabbe, Eleanor Holmes, Mark Spitz, Donna DeVarona and Janet Evans. There are informative videos, interactive kid-friendly displays and other memorabilia. Also on the property are a gift shop, library, auditorium and offices. The idea for a swimming hall of fame originated in the early 1960s when college swim coaches and group of Ft. Lauderdale leading citizens approached the Amateur Athletic Union with the idea. After receiving bids from several cities, the AAU selected Fort Lauderdale's proposal which included the construction of a world-class pool to replace the old Casino Pool. The Casino Pool had been built in 1928 and quickly became the winter break training location for northern swim teams. In 1965 the opening ceremony for the new aquatic facility was televised on CBS Sports Spectacular and three years later, ISHOF was officially recognized by FINA, the sport's international governing body. The International Swimming Hall of Fame is located at One Hall of Fame Drive, Ft. Laud., FL 33316.
