Fresh off a two-week Copa America layoff, D.C. United saw a chance to set aside a turbulent Major League Soccer season and kick-start some much-needed momentum against the second-tier Fort Lauderdale Strikers in a fourth-round U.S. Open Cup matchup Wednesday night at Maryland SoccerPlex.

But as on so many other occasions, goals and momentum were nowhere to be found. The Strikers escaped with a victory in penalty kicks, mobbing Matheus Gonzalez after his spot kick ended a scoreless affair in Boyds.
