1. Players Bar & Grill swings into Waverly Woods

First, don’t mistake the new Players Bar & Grill for what used to be Mangia’s in Waverly Woods Shopping Center. The new upscale bar and grill may occupy the same spot in the strip, but owner Simon Sadoun, general manager Sean Brown and executive chef Doug Jones have transformed the space and menu into a classy sports-themed restaurant with an eclectic variety of dishes, from stuffed avocado appetizers to seafood jambalaya and gourmet desserts almost too pretty to eat — but you will.

5. A sign of the times: Road signs need better maintenance

Q: I have a concern regarding the lighting for the overhead sign marking the exit from the northbound Turnpike (I-476) to Route 22. I often return from Philadelphia at night, and it is very difficult to read the sign. Once I failed to see it, missed the...

7. More young people admit to driving drowsy

The Road Warrior w/Dan Hartzell
As if parents of young adults didn’t have enough to fret about, a greater percentage of young people admit to driving drowsy at least some of the time, according to a survey by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. The nonprofit agency reported...

9. PennDOT's Jersey barriers: You break it, you bought it

The Road Warrior w/Dan Hartzell
In the Jan. 4 column on the motorist who was charged more than $8,500 to replace sections of PennDOT Jersey barrier damaged by her vehicle in a one-car accident determined to be her fault, I reported that state officials could not secure information on...

11. Truck lanes on I-78 will give cars a pass

Q: A recent article described planned safety improvements to I-78 around the Krumsville interchange. The work will include truck lanes that slow-moving tractor-trailers could use to allow cars to pass safely. That's great, but I must wonder if PennDOT planners have recently traveled on 78 between Route 33 and the Route 309 split. The same conditions often prevail there as well. It is with little exaggeration that I claim to regularly be stuck behind two columns of traffic while a truck going 46 mph passes one doing 45. This creates a serious safety hazard with other traffic flowing at 65 mph or more. When will truck lanes be added to eastbound 78 approaching 33 and westbound 78 just beyond Route 412? I know this situation won't be resolved overnight, but it would be encouraging to know that PennDOT's engines are being revved at the starting line.

13. Drowsy driving is only made worse by boredom

Drowsy driving can drive a person to distraction. Or is it the other way around? Or, perhaps, it's the lack of distractions that can drive a person to drowsy driving.

15. Crash into a Jersey barrier? Expect a bill from PennDOT

Q: My daughter was going west on Center Valley Parkway on a wet afternoon in October when she turned onto the access road leading to Route 309 north, and struck the barrier. Though she and her son recovered fully from their injuries, her car was 'totaled'. Ambulance personnel told her they respond to similar accidents at this intersection several times a month. Subsequently she received a PennDOT demand that she and her insurance company pay $8,575 to repair damage to 37.5 feet of the barrier. She was shocked; there was no way she caused that amount of damage. I realize PennDOT needs money for road repairs, but this intersection is so poorly designed that accidents are going to continue to happen until it is reconfigured. Neither my daughter nor the insurance company should have to pay the amount demanded by PennDOT.

17. Storm grates, 'manholes' have motorists feeling low

Q: Why would PennDOT replace both bridges on Tilghman Street over Chapmans Road and the railroad tracks in Upper Macungie and not repair the blatant problem of the low storm-sewer inlet on the right-hand westbound lane just west of the railroad bridge?...
