Firecracker 10K winners took different paths to victory

Approaching the halfway point of the 34th edition of the Arbutus Firecracker 10K on July 4, Dave Berdan decided it was time to make his move.

Having run stride for stride with eventual runner-up Eric Schuler, 23, for the first 3 miles on the hilly 6.2-mile course, the 35-year-old Berdan reasoned that a five-minute pace on the fourth mile might be just what he needed to defend his 2015 Firecracker 10K title.

It worked.

Berdan went on to post a final time of 32:55, shaving a second off his winning time last year as the top overall finisher among 315 entrants.
