3. Star Studded Sandy Relief Concert Highlights

The 12-12-12 benefit concert for the victims of Superstorm Sandy began with a brilliant four-song set by New Jersey’s own Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band and wrapped over five hours later with Paul McCartney being overrun by overkill on the smoke machines and pyrotechnics.. In between, veteran rockers including Roger Waters of Pink Floyd, Bon Jovi, Eric Clapton, the Rolling Stones, The Who and Billy Joel, along with Alicia Keys, Kanye West and Coldplay frontman Chris Martin treated the sold out crowd at New York’s Madison Square Garden to current and classic hits. 13. Allan Powell: A critical debate that cries for balance

It is almost a certainty that the ongoing debate about the merits of individualism versus the need for a profound community spirit will not be a compelling interest for many citizens. Such an old and subtle issue can only get a yawn. For this reason,...

  19. Faces, some masked, of Anonymous

Two years ago in December, Visa, MasterCard and PayPal cut off all financial services to WikiLeaks. This left the controversial website blocked off from accepting online donations — a state of affairs that did not sit well with members of the sprawling Internet activist group known as Anonymous, which let its collective displeasure be known when it launched brief (but attention-getting) disruptions affecting each company's website. They called it Operation Payback.

  21. DVD review: Crime docs win a positive verdict

In 1994, Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin, and Jessie Misskelley Jr. — teenagers who came to be known as the West Memphis Three — were convicted of murdering three little boys in a Satanic ritual. There were a lot of things wrong with their trial, and in 1996 filmmakers Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky stirred up public interest with “Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Woods” — the first of this set's three features. Despite the subsequent activism by their supporters, it was 17 years before the boys-now-men were released. Along the way, Berlinger and Sinofsky made two follow-ups — subtitled “Revelations” and “Purgatory” — in 2000 and 2011.

  23. 'West of Memphis' full of real-life twists and turns

One might assume that a story already covered by a trilogy of documentaries, numerous books, countless articles and with a trail of celebrity supporters including Johnny Depp, Eddie Vedder and Natalie Maines had already earned enough attention. The young men known as the West Memphis Three — Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley — became modern-day folk heroes as the story of their imprisonment over the graphic, sensational 1993 murders of three 8-year-old boys in West Memphis, Ark., spread during their nearly two decades in jail.
