81 wins. Four Cup championships. Three Daytona 500 trophies. Those facts alone make Jeff Gordon one of NASCAR¿s most decorated drivers of all time, and, at the age of 36, the Vallejo, Calif., native still has plenty of time to reach greater heights.

To put his career in perspective, only one other driver (Darrell Waltrip) has won more races (84) in NASCAR¿s modern era (1972-present). And Gordon is well within striking distance of the NASCAR record of seven season championships, a mark shared by the sport¿s most revered names, Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt.

A driver for Hendrick Motorsports since his Winston Cup debut in 1994, Gordon has also left his mark as co-car owner and mentor to Hendrick teammate Jimmie Johnson, the 2006 and 2007 Nextel Cup champion. In 2008, he¿ll drive the No. 24 DuPont Chevrolet for Hendrick Motorsports.

  1. Patrick 'dedicated' to NASCAR future

Is there any question NASCAR's "It Girl" is serious about hanging with the big boys? News flash: Danica Patrick is skipping the Indianapolis 500 to race in the Coca-Cola 600 in May. That shows a serious level of engagement for Patrick, who has dabbled...

  3. End of love-bug racing?

NASCAR has heard the cries of racing fans who hate tandem — or love-bug — racing. The official memo was released last week: Squash all love bugs. There will be no Talladega Tandems. NASCAR is moving to a larger restrictor plate for next...

  5. They'll be playing it safe

Welcome to NASCAR's wild-card weekend. It's Talladega, baby, where wreckin' and racin' are part of the lore of one of NASCAR's famed superspeedways. For the handful of guys still in the hunt for a Cup title, it means a conservative approach for much...

  9. 'Smoke' sends a signal

Well, hello there, Tony Stewart. Where have you been? The dynamics of the Chase for the Sprint Cup certainly got shuffled in a hurry Monday at Chicagoland Speedway, where one of the favorites, Jeff Gordon, ran out of gas, and Stewart, one of the guys...

  11. Big names may not make Chase

Strap on your HANS device, everybody. It's going to be a wild ride with six races to go before the 12-driver field is set for the Chase for the Sprint Cup Championship. The top seven guys are safe. But once you get below Jeff Gordon, now seventh, there'...

  13. Edwards slides off track

It's not often you see somebody trying to implode his championship aspirations with a stick of dynamite and a bottle of tequila in tow. But that's the image Carl Edwards is cultivating. He has gone rogue. Or maybe not. Will he be back with Jack Roush...

  15. Patrick still has a lot to prove

When it comes to polarizing athletes, Danica Patrick is probably ranked with Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow in a category all their own. So it's not surprising that not everyone in NASCAR is smitten by the news Patrick is expected to run a full 2012...

  17. Don't count on Chase changes

Although there has been an occasional push from a driver to include a road course in the Chase — I recall Ryan Newman suggesting that Daytona's road course could be a viable venue — don't expect any changes in the current format. The road...

It's shaping up to be a wild ride as NASCAR heads into the last two regular-season races (Atlanta, Sunday night) and Richmond (Sept. 10) before the 12-driver field is set for the Chase. Five guys are in: Kyle Busch, Jimmie Johnson, Matt Kenseth, Carl...

  21. Dale pales in comparison

Certainly there have been worse transactions in the history of sports. Take your pick: The Red Sox selling Babe Ruth so they could finance a Broadway musical. The Baltimore Colts forcibly dumping pouty Sanford rookie QB John Elway for Mark Hermann and...

  23. Gordon's reign cleanses

HAMPTON, Ga. — Shortly after the 200th lap in Tuesday's AdvoCare 500, a heavy mist started falling on Atlanta Motor Speedway, forcing officials to call for a caution. After pit stops by the usual suspects, it was time to meet the new drivers atop...
