Ellicott City

Highlights

Despite nature's best efforts, Ellicott City, which was founded in 1772 as Ellicott Mills, stands today with all the old-country charm of its early days. Preservation is key to the community of Ellicott City, and restoring historic landmarks is something the residents believe in. Indeed, the town itself seems to want to be preserved, having survived three major fires and two major floods. Despite those potential disasters, Ellicott City thrives. New businesses have taken the place of burned-down ones on Main Street, and a railroad bridge at the end of the street is marked with lines that document the floods. Residents of the town, which is the seat of Howard County, have an unusually strong... Show more »

Residents of the town, which is the seat of Howard County, have an unusually strong sense of community for this day and age. Also, the town often plays host to a weekend crowd of antique shoppers who come to peruse the many boutiques of the old town. Aside from the diversity of bars, restaurants and antique shops, Ellicott City offers quite a few buildings that are antiques themselves. Among these are the B&O Railroad Station Museum, the Patapsco Female Institute and just about every building on Main Street, from the pubs to the fire station -- almost all of which are rumored to be haunted. To that end, Ellicott City offers what is purportedly one of the best ghost tours in the state, which runs from April to December every year. « Show less

  1. Stevenson relying on defensive midfield in NCAA tournament

At Stevenson, playing defensive midfield is almost as much about athleticism as it is about defensive commitment. A unit composed of long-stick midfielders Chad Williams, Ryan Rubenstein and Warren Pumphrey and short-stick midfielders Connor Curro, Dylan Muti, Marcellus Preston and Peter Green must keep an opponent’s midfielders at bay and turn defense into instant offense.

  5. A sensitive portrait of a troubled child

Thanks very much and congratulations on Kevin Rector's very informative and sensitive article, "Girl charged in father's death struggled with mental health" (May 19). As educators and professional counselors, and as residents of the Mount Hebron area with children who graduated from the high school, we have been shocked at the news of Dennis Lane's murder. Your story provided valuable information about the complex issues that parents and educators deal with in relation to children and students who have developmental and mental health issues. Hopefully, this tragic event and the information you have provided will help parents, educators and members of the community work together to deal with these kinds of issues in a proactive and preventive manner.

  9. Our Picks: St. Patrick's Day Events Around Fairfield County

Top o' the mornin' to you. While many St. Patrick's Day parades have already turned our streets green with decorations (and maybe some vomit, caused by binge drinking before noon), the real, live, official St. Patrick's Day isn't until this Sunday. Many celebrations have yet to happen. The Ridgefield Playhouse hosts the Irish Comedy Tour on Thursday, featuring comedians Derek Richards, Mike McCarthy, Joey Carroll, Jim Campbell and Derrick Keane, all of Irish descent. Also on Thursday, the Stratford Library will be throwing a Leprechaun Party for children ages 5 to 12 in which kids are encouraged to wear green, listen to an Irish story, play games and eat green snacks. Friday is Bridgeport's parade day, and the march through the downtown area will beginning at noon, featuring performances by the Sheeaun Academy of Irish Dance (pictured), The Fairfield Gaelic Pipe and Drum Band, The Lenihan School of Dance and the Mummer's John's Uptown String Band. After the parade, go to Two Boots to hear music by Talking to Walls and Whiskey for Breakfast, as well as some bagpipe music. Meanwhile, Danbury's parade isn't happening until next Sunday, March 24th at 2 p.m., if you can recover from this week's festivities in time. The Fairfield Theatre welcomes U2Nation, a U2 tribute band, on Sunday, a bit of a stretch since they're just covering an Irish band, but we'll take it anyway. The Acoustic Cafe will open at 3pm Sunday and have an early show (music starts at 6pm) featuring Pocket Hotties, Darian Cunning, Talking to Walls and the Steve Detroy Trio.
