On Nov. 28, 2007, he passed Doug MacLean for most wins (84) ever by a Panthers coach. He's also the Ottawa Senators' all-time leader in wins (341), games coached (692), playoff wins (31) and playoff games coached (69). He had a 341-255-96 record in nine regular seasons with the Senators before being fired after the 2003-04 season. That year, he led the Senators to a 43-23-10-6 record (102 points). On Nov. 2, 2006, Martin became the 13th head coach in NHL history to record his 450th win and on March 3, 2007 Martin became the 12th coach in league history to coach his 1,000th game. Born on Oct. 1, 1952 in St. Pascal, Ontario, Martin never played a game in the NHL, but was teammates with Keenan at St. Lawrence University. He and Keenan later worked together as coach and general manager, respectively, with the Florida Panthers. Martin served as coach of the Peterborough Petes in the Ontario Hockey League and then led the junior team, Guelph Platers, to the 1986 Memorial Cup championship. He was named OHL coach of the year. Martin entered the NHL as the Blues' head coach in 1986-87 and 1987-88. He joined the Senators after spending the first half of the 1995-96 season with eventual Stanley Cup champion Colorado Avalanche, serving as an assistant coach to Marc Crawford. With the Senators, Martin was nominated four times for the Jack Adams Trophy as NHL Coach of the Year, but was ultimately fired because of playoff failures. He couldn't get the Senators past the Eastern Conference finals. Martin also has international coaching experience. He was an assistant coach for Team Canada at the 2006 Winter Olympics and was Canada's assistant general manager at the 2007 World Championships. As general manager of the Florida Panthers', Martin's key moves have been trading three draft picks for goalie Tomas Vokoun, signing forwards Stephen Weiss and Nathan Horton to six-year deals and locking up defenseman Bryan Allen for five years. Martin lives in Pompano Beach, Florida and has two daughters, Angela and Nathalee.
