Matthew Centrowitz (Broadneck) finishes 8th in 1,500-meter final at world championships

Matthew Centrowitz (Broadneck) kept up with the leaders for nearly all of the 1,500-meter final in Beijing's IAAF World Championships on Sunday, but he could not match his competitors' closing speed over the final 150 meters. Centrowitz, a two-time medalist in the event, faded to finish eighth with a time of 3 minutes, 36.13 seconds, his lowest finish at a world championships or Olympics. Asbel Kiprop of Kenya won his third straight world championship in 3:34.40. "That was my best effort," Centrowitz said. "I gave it everything I had, no excuses.
