John Carroll opens field hockey season with win over Bryn Mawr

The John Carroll field hockey team opened its season Thursday, defeating visiting Bryn Mawr, 2-1, on the turf in Bel Air. Early in the first half, sophomore midfielder Alyssa Kraus put the Patriots ahead on a quick flick, from near the right post. Sydney Stephenson, of Bryn Mawr, tied the game later in the first half with a powerful shot during a penalty corner. The score remained tied for much of the second half until Ashlee Kothenbeutel, a sophomore forward, scored the Patriots game winner on an unassisted shot with four minutes left. Patriots junior goalie Emma Gromacki made 11 saves in the win.
