5. Long wait continues for next Triple Crown winner

Horse racing fans talk about their sport not having a Triple Crown winner in nearly 35 years much the way baseball fans lament the fact that their favorite game has gone more than twice as long without a .400 hitter.

  9. Who's your daddy? For Orb, it's Malibu Moon

The Preakness means more to Marylanders when there's a Marylander in the race, and this year we have the obvious connection in Orb, the Kentucky Derby winner owned in part by Stuart Janney III, chairman of Bessemer Trust and resident of Butler, in the heart of horse country north of Baltimore.

Nicole Stall boarded the first plane to Maryland she could catch when she heard of Benjamin Boniface's death last June. She was there to grieve the death of a boy she had known since his birth. But also to work. In the days after the 20-year-old's death...

  17. No word on whether screamin' Tom Brady will show up for Preakness

By now you've surely seen the video, below, of Tom Brady getting super, duper excited about Orb winning the Kentucky Derby. In it, he runs over to congratulate Ogden Phipps II, son of co-owner Ogden Mills "Dinny" Phipps. I'm not sure how they know each other. Maybe Brady just really revels in the good fortune of other fantastically rich people. Also, he apparently bet $4,700 on the colt and won $25,000.

  19. Preakness field coming together slowly

Some years, Maryland Jockey Club stakes coordinator Coley Blind has to turn horses away from the Preakness. He and other members of the staff may look through the credentials of 20 horses, calculating their earnings -- the Preakness uses a fairly complicated three-tiered system -- to determine the 14-horse field.
