Column | Feb 13, 2014 | 11:43 PMAlyssa Thomas scored 18 points and had 12 rebounds to help No. 9 Maryland (20-4, 8-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) cruise to a 67-52 victory over host Miami (12-12, 4-7) on Thursday night. Freshman Brionna Jones (Aberdeen) had 11 points and five rebounds in 17 minutes. Alicia DeVaughn added nine points and 11 rebounds, all in the second half. The Terps, who led 36-27 at the half, finished the game with a 48-20 edge in rebounds and had 12 assists to five for the Hurricanes. Thomas' double double was her 19th in 24 games this season and helped Maryland reach the 20-win mark for the 10th time in coach Brenda Frese's 12 seasons. “I really like how we played and I thought it was a pretty complete game for us,” Frese said. “Anytime you go on the road in the ACC and as talented as Miami is, it’s just a really big win for us. Love the fact that we dominated the glass. I thought we were able to use our size inside to our advantage. I really thought our defense and our rebounding were keys for us.” Twenty-five of Maryland's rebounds were on the offensive glass. The Terps started the game on a 10-0 run and never trailed in their first victory at Miami since 2009. Miami tied the game at 21, but a 15-6 run in the final 4:55 of the half gave Maryland a 36-27 lead and a 17-4 run in the second half extended the advantage to 51-31. Thomas is just 111 points from breaking Crystal Langhorne’s school scoring record of 2,247 points. Thomas’ 1,112 career rebounds are 117 shy of Langhorne’s record of 1,229. With her 57th career double double, she needs just three to surpass Langhorne’s record of 59. The win was the Terps' fourth straight win after three consecutive losses. Maryland's next game is Monday at 7 p.m. at No. 3 Duke on ESPN2.
