Jim Herman leads Honda Classic

The wind was howling for the opening round of the Honda Classic, and Jim Herman felt right at home. Herman, who lives up the road in Palm City, shot a bogey-free 5-under-par 65 Thursday to take the first-round lead as winds of 15-20 mph that gusted to 34 mph swept across the Champion Course at PGA National Resort & Spa. Brendan Steele was second with a 4-under 66, followed by 2005 Honda Classic winner Padraig Harrington, Patrick Reed and Martin Flores at 67. Seven players were tied for sixth at 68, including PGA Tour rookie Daniel Berger of Jupiter and 2011 Honda champion Rory Sabbatini. Only 34 players shot par or better.
