SPRINGFIELD, N.J. — Rory McIlroy stuttered to another sideways start at a major, shooting a 4-over 74 he called the product of lousy putting.

"I'm happy with my game from tee-to-green," the two-time PGA champ said. "Driving the ball as well as I have, ever, I think. Iron play feels good. Just when I get on the greens, its just a different story."

McIlroy left a handful of putts short, including a 6-footer for birdie, on a day when he struggled with the pace of Baltusrol's greens. Occasionally, McIlroy found himself over-reading the greens.
