Beatrice Pitts Payne always knew she wanted to be a teacher. As a child, Payne would align her mothers' chairs and teach them, pretending they were students. "I had members of my family who were teachers and I wanted to follow in their footsteps," she said. Payne was raised in Baltimore during the 1920s, a time when segregation made the pickings slim for African-Americans who wanted to pursue an education. She obtained her high school education at the Maryland Normal and Industrial School, the precursor to Bowie State University, then went on to obtain a Maryland Teacher's First Grade Certificate from the normal school at Bowie.
