1. Ravens news, notes and opinions

The Ravens had 13 players not participating in any part of practice Saturday and another two (tight end Ed Dickson and linebacker Darry Blackstock) who didn’t finish the workout because of injuries. The potentially season-ending Achilles tear to linebacker Terrell Suggs was the biggest blow obviously, but the loss of practice time for first or second-year players like Bernard Pierce (hamstring), Tandon Doss (hamstring), Jah Reid (calf), Courtney Upshaw (shoulder) and Jimmy Smith (back) shouldn’t be overlooked. Upshaw is the only one on the list that was a near certain starter, though Smith is competing with Cary Williams for a starting role. But the rest of the above-mentioned group figure to, at the very least, be key reserves. Ravens coach John Harbaugh does a great job not publicly fixating or fretting about injuries, but I’d have to imagine the coaching staff is getting anxious with how much practice time these guys are missing. The good news is Upshaw says he is real close to a return and Doss said that he expects to practice today.

3. Birk out three to four weeks, but he's still in line to be Ravens' center

Starting center Matt Birk is out three to four weeks after having minor knee surgery, and Casey Rabach won't be joining the Ravens after failing his physical.

5. Even after drafting Pierce, the Ravens still have decisions to make at running back

Here is a question that the Ravens will have to answer in the coming weeks: Will they be comfortable going into the season without an experienced backup behind Ray Rice?

9. Fantasy Fodder: So Jamaal Charles got hurt; now what?

When Jamaal Charles tore his ACL on Sunday, any hopes the Kansas City Chiefs had of making it back to the NFL playoffs were shredded. The season-ending injury to Charles, a top-five pick in most fantasy leagues, is also a devastating blow to fantasy owners who were banking on a monster season from the dual-threat back.

11. Game 6: Flat performance

Sun reporter
CHICAGO // The demons that have haunted the Ravens all season came crashing down like the unmerciful downpour at Solider Field, where a season of soaring expectations continued to slip further away. Thanks to costly penalties and a collapsing offense,...

13. J. Lewis to Browns

Sun reporter
Running back Jamal Lewis signed with the Cleveland Browns last night, which likely means the Ravens will look to trade for the Buffalo Bills' Willis McGahee by today. In an unusual turn of events, Lewis, the Ravens' all-time leading rusher, will join a...

15. Justice may be served too late for ex-Bear Benson

O, by the Way
Even before Cedric Benson faced alcohol-related charges in Texas in the off-season, he was on thin ice with the Chicago Bears. Benson -- who flashed during the Bears??? Super Bowl season in 2006 with 647 yards, a 4.1 yards-per-carry average......

17. Game 15: Ravens find way in desert

On a weekend when AFC playoff teams were riddled by upsets, the Ravens proved bulletproof in a desert ambush.

19. Strains, sprains and a few bad breaks

It's still early, but Deuce McAllister has to be the overwhelming favorite for the biggest fantasy flop of 2004. McAllister was a consensus top-6 pick in most leagues, but his stat line to date – 19 carries, 58 yards, two fumbles lost in two games –...

21. Just another manic Monday night

These Monday nighters are killing me. Two weeks ago I go into the final game of the week with a lead and lose on Terrell Owens' touchdown catch that wasn't a catch. Last week I go in with a lead and barely hang on to win when Clinton Portis gets dragged...

23. Those breezes you feel are trade winds

Things are beginning to get a little tense in fantasy world. Injuries are piling up, trade talk is picking up and the playoffs are right around the corner. Everybody's on a short leash. Back in August, Travis Henry was my second-round draft pick....
