Ray Lewis

The Baltimore Ravens selected linebacker Ray Lewis with the 26th pick in the 1996 draft, making him the second player ever chosen by the franchise behind Jonathan Ogden. Lewis instantly became the face of the Ravens, leading the team in tackles as a rookie and making the Pro Bowl. He led the entire NFL in tackles during his second season. In 2000, he helped lead the Ravens to a Super Bowl victory over the Giants, and was named the game's Most Valuable Player. He was also named the NFL's Defensive Player of the Year and was a unanimous All-Pro selection. In 2003, Lewis was named the NFL's Defensive Player of the Year for the second time. Overall, he's appeared in eight Pro Bowls and been named an All-Pro seven times. Lewis' career has not been without controversy, however. He and two friends were arrested and charged with the murder of two men in January 2000 after a fight outside a nightclub in Atlanta. Lewis had the murder charge dismissed and pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of obstruction of justice for initially lying to police about knowing his two co-defendants. NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue fined Lewis $250,000 for conduct detrimental to the league. Lewis attended the University of Miami, where he was a two-time All-American before skipping his senior season to go pro.  « Show less

  17. New Ravens cornerback Foxworth wise beyond his years

<span class=&quot;dropcap_large">H</span>is parents, his girlfriend and his teammates all say the same thing about Domonique Foxworth. The Ravens cornerback might look like a 26-year-old, he might run like a 26-year-old, but he thinks and conducts his life like a 40-year-old - always has. His parents considered him more responsible than his brother, who is two years older. His NFL mentor, Champ Bailey, considered him the levelheaded one in their relationship. Whether the subject is President Barack Obama, the role of a black athlete in modern society or the NFL players union's treatment of retired players, Foxworth can deliver a well-crafted opinion.
