Lewis instantly became the face of the Ravens, leading the team in tackles as a rookie and making the Pro Bowl. He led the entire NFL in tackles during his second season. In 2000, he helped lead the Ravens to a Super Bowl victory over the Giants, and was named the game's Most Valuable Player. He was also named the NFL's Defensive Player of the Year and was a unanimous All-Pro selection. The Ravens' defense set a single-season record by allowing just 165 points during the 2000 season, and Lewis called the unit the best defense in the history of the league. In 2003, Lewis was named the NFL's Defensive Player of the Year for the second time. Overall, he's appeared in eight Pro Bowls and been named an All-Pro seven times. Lewis' career has not been without controversy, however. He and two friends were arrested and charged with the murder of two men in January 2000 after a fight outside a nightclub in Atlanta. Lewis had the murder charge dismissed and pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of obstruction of justice for initially lying to police about knowing his two co-defendants. NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue fined Lewis $250,000 for conduct detrimental to the league. Lewis attended the University of Miami, where he was a two-time All-American before skipping his senior season to go pro.
