1. Projecting the rest of the Ravens' season

We've reached the quarter pole of the NFL season, and it's probably fair to say we still don't quite know what to make of this Ravens team.
We've reached the quarter pole of the NFL season, and it's probably fair to say we still don't quite know what to make of this Ravens team. They've pounded two of their rivals (the Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Jets), they've laid an egg against a...

3. Navy catches itself loafing in big loss to Southern Mississippi

In the lexicon of Navy football, they are called "loafs" — as in loafing. On defense, they come when linemen don't converge on a quarterback whose pocket has broken down; or when linebackers stop their pursuit of a running back about to break through for a big gain; or when a cornerback or safety thinks the other is going to bring down a receiver who just made a catch in the middle of the field.

5. Passing game stands out as problem area for Ravens

In the second quarter of the Ravens' 20-14 win over the Cleveland Browns on Saturday, Joe Flacco and Ray Rice perfectly executed what was perhaps the prettiest scoring play this season for Baltimore.

7. Ravens news, notes and opinions

Of the Ravens’ final 11 games, four of them will be played against teams with first-year starting quarterbacks. That includes the two games against the Cincinnati Bengals and their rookie signal-caller Andy Dalton, the game against the Curtis Painter-led Indianapolis Colts and Monday night’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars and rookie quarterback Blaine Gabbert. It does not include the Oct. 30 Arizona Cardinals tilt, though it easily could because Kevin Kolb is essentially an undisputed starter for the first time in his career. Another two will be played against the Cleveland Browns and their struggling second-year quarterback Colt McCoy. And then there are the games against the Seattle Seahawks, who will likely start Tarvaris Jackson, and the San Francisco 49ers, who barring an injury will start Alex Smith. Both Jackson and Smith have been maligned throughout their young careers. All of what I just mentioned is a long way of saying that the Ravens will face two elite quarterbacks – the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Ben Roethlisberger and the San Diego Chargers Philip Rivers – the rest of the regular season. That, more than anything, is why I think the Ravens will wind up winning more games than most people originally expected. We all know the “Any Given Sunday” cliches, but the Ravens have been feasting on young and unproven quarterbacks for years. The Jets’ Mark Sanchez and the Rams’ Sam Bradford were added to that list already this season. With how aggressive defensive coordinator Chuck Pagano has been and how well the Ravens have shut down the run, it’s very hard to envision some of these quarterbacks having any extended success against this defense.

9. Ravens defense out to prove San Diego game was a fluke

Disappointment and frustration might have been appropriate words to describe the emotions reverberating through the Ravens defense in the aftermath of Sunday night's 20-point loss to the San Diego Chargers.

11. Ravens fault lack of execution for troubles against San Diego

If you only look at the statistics from the Ravens' 34-14 loss to the Chargers on Sunday night, you could easily surmise that the team had trouble protecting Joe Flacco. Baltimore's fourth-year quarterback was sacked five times, and three of those were at the hands of former Ravens linebacker Antwan Barnes.

13. Chargers' Rivers heating up heading into Ravens game

In the heat of nearly every moment on a football field, San Diego quarterback Philip Rivers is said to be a man of many words — some more family friendly than others — whether his Chargers are winning big or getting their expletives handed to them.

15. Pre-snap read: Ravens at Chargers

Of the Ravens' remaining opponents, the toughest might be the 6-7 San Diego Chargers, who were the consensus favorites to win the AFC West before the season. The Chargers have been one of 2011's biggest disappointments, but they pose a serious threat to the 10-3 Ravens, who must win tonight to maintain control of the AFC's top playoff seed.

17. ESPN's Tim Hasselbeck breaks down Joe Flacco

Last week, I chatted with ESPN analyst and ex-NFL quarterback Tim Hasselbeck about San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers for an advance of the Ravens-Chargers game. While I had him on the line, I asked him about Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco, who has had an up-and-down season in 2011, his fourth in the NFL.

21. What they're saying: Ravens are doomed on the road

The Ravens lost on the road, 34-14, to the San Diego Chargers on Sunday night. And now that they are back in second place in the AFC North -- they will remain there unless the Pittsburgh Steelers lose another game -- the consensus among a sampling of national writers is that the Ravens will meet a similar fate in the playoffs.
