The Ravens waited until the seventh round to draft Elon wide receiver Aaron Mellette on Saturday evening.
The Ravens waited until the seventh round to draft Elon wide receiver Aaron Mellette on Saturday evening. But the wait felt much, much longer to Mellette, who some analysts believed would come off the board earlier in the draft’s final day. Soon...

5. Ravens news, notes and opinions

This is probably pretty obvious, but it’s important enough to mention that the next 32 hours will be huge in the Ravens’ quest to retain Pro Bowl left guard Ben Grubbs. The Ravens have made what both sides have acknowledged was a substantial offer to Grubbs to convince him to eschew free agency and remain in Baltimore. All indications are that there isn’t much leeway to expand on the offer. Free agents aren’t allowed to negotiate with other teams until 4 p.m. tomorrow, but you can bet that Grubbs’ representative, Pat Dye, has already gotten a good idea about what teams are interested in his client and what they’re willing to pay. If Grubbs goes to free agency, that is a good indication that there will be another offer out there that surpasses the Ravens’ bid. And I wouldn’t be totally surprised if the Ravens then pull their offer and move on from Grubbs. That’s just my speculation based on them knowing they won’t win a bidding war with where they are with their salary cap situation.

At the NFL Scouting Combine late last month, Ravens coach John Harbaugh acknowledged something that was probably pretty obvious to anybody even remotely familiar with the team’s salary cap situation.

17. Fantasy Fodder: Helping you survive the playoffs

We are into the nitty-gritty of the fantasy playoffs, so let’s get down to business with some injury updates, a few waiver-wire pickups if you’re desperate, and more. 21. Fantasy Fodder: So Jamaal Charles got hurt; now what?

When Jamaal Charles tore his ACL on Sunday, any hopes the Kansas City Chiefs had of making it back to the NFL playoffs were shredded. The season-ending injury to Charles, a top-five pick in most fantasy leagues, is also a devastating blow to fantasy owners who were banking on a monster season from the dual-threat back.
