1. Slow start doomed Ravens defense in preseason opener

The Ravens’ secondary struggled in the preseason opener against the Atlanta Falcons, allowing quarterback Matt Ryan to throw for 155 yards and Julio Jones to catch six balls for 109 yards and a touchdown in one quarter. However, defensive coordinator Dean Pees said the defense’s problems against the Falcons were not confined to the secondary.

  5. More quotes from Ed Reed's interview on The Fan

Ed Reed's interview on 105.7 The Fan last night rambled on for more than 20 entertaining minutes, so there were a few interesting comments that couldn't be squeezed into my story published in Thursday's newspaper.

  7. Kemoeatu looks for second chance with Ravens

Not too long ago, Ma'ake Kemoeatu had a knack for swallowing up opposing blockers and running backs with remarkable efficiency. But then the nose tackle was beset by injuries, sitting out two of the last three seasons. Kemoeatu, 33, is eager to revive...

  9. ESPN's Wiley says Ravens' Reed, Lewis are still leaders on 'D'

I reached out to ESPN analyst Marcellus Wiley to chat with him about the "aging" Ravens defense for a story that ran in Saturday's newspaper, but I didn't hear from Wiley until after I had sent my story into my editors Friday night (I'll cut Marcellus some slack since he's operating on West Coast time). Anyway, I still wanted to pass along his thoughts, especially since he thinks the Ravens will contend for a Super Bowl again this season.

  11. Ravens hold on for 31-29 win over Cowboys

In the final frantic two minutes, Ravens players hobbled on and off the field, some occupying roles that they had never before been asked to fill. By necessity, Dean Pees sent in defensive packages that the Ravens hadn’t even practiced, all while a once seemingly-comfortable lead and the NFL’s longest home winning streak hung in the balance.

The reality smacked the Ravens in the face like one of Joe Flacco’s passes that got batted back toward the line of scrimmage by a swarming Houston Texans defense.

  15. Ravens set franchise record for points in dominant win over Raiders

There was Ray Rice going untouched for a 7-yard touchdown run. Torrey Smith sprinting free behind the Oakland Raiders’ defense and connecting with Joe Flacco for a 47-yard score. And punter/holder Sam Koch encountering very little resistance during his 7-yard touchdown scamper on a fake field goal.

  21. Ravens' news, notes and opinions after Week One of training camp

Ravens left tackle Bryant McKinnie is in town and will be at the Under Armour Performance Center today, but it’s still too early to assume that he will regain his starting left tackle spot. That is because the Ravens have to find out whether he’s healthy enough and in good enough condition to get out on the field. Remember, that was the issue with McKinnie all along before the big left tackle’s absence prompted all sorts of theories about why he didn’t report for training camp. And now, not only will he have to pass the conditioning test and show team officials that he’s in good enough shape, he’s also going to have to prove his back is healthy. McKinnie told reporters the past few days that he hurt his back in an accident at home, and that’s why he didn’t show up for the first full-team workout last week.

  23. Cornerback Cary Williams optimistic about a long-term deal

Ravens cornerback Cary Williams attended Wednesday’s organized team activity, marking the second straight week he has been on hand for the voluntary workouts. His presence was notable because he is recovering from offseason hip surgery and also because of his clouded contract situation.
