1. Ravens news, notes and opinions on the draft

If the Ravens want Alabama linebacker Dont’a Hightower as much as some people believe that they do, I suspect their first call when Round One starts to unfold will be to the Detroit Lions, who hold the 23rd overall pick. The significance of that spot is that it’s one ahead of the Pittsburgh Steelers, who reportedly covet Hightower. If the Ravens are convinced that Hightower is their guy and they are willing to pay the cost of moving up six spots, which would probably be a third or fourth-round pick, a deal shouldn’t be too hard to work out. Lions senior personnel executive James Harris is the former director of pro personnel for the Ravens and he remains very close with Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome. Lions coach Jim Schwartz also is a former Ravens staff member and he remains friendly with a couple of people at the Castle, including Newsome. So the Lions are definitely worth keeping an eye on and I’d have to imagine that there has already been some dialogue between the two teams.

  3. NFL free agency primer: cornerbacks

A year ago, Ravens fans dreamed of Nnamdi Asomugha, the star free agent cornerback who eventually signed with the Philadelphia Eagles. After all, the secondary was an area where the Ravens needed to improve.

  7. Harbaugh says he and Suggs had no issues Sunday

This photo, snapped by Karl Merton Ferron of The Baltimore Sun during the third quarter of Sunday night’s 34-14 loss to the San Diego Chargers, was a talker on Monday. It appears to be an animated outburst from Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs directed at coach John Harbaugh after another Chargers touchdown.

  11. Which Jim was at fault: Schwartz or Harbaugh?

Forget the football. That little altercation between Detroit coach Jim Schwartz and San Francisco coach (and former Ravens quarterback and current sibling of John Harbaugh) Jim Harbaugh was the talk of the NFL on Sunday. The two coaches had to be separated after the post-game back slap following the 49ers' victory.

  13. Harbaugh comments on brother's controversial post-game handshake

Maybe it just seems like an every-week occurrence, but Ravens coach John Harbaugh was asked for at least the second time in as many weeks about a decision made by his brother Jim Harbaugh, who coaches the San Francisco 49ers.

I love cheerleaders almost as much as I love football, and Esquire has an ingenious Monday morning football feature where they ask a cheerleader for the skinny on the team she waves her pompoms for every Sunday.

  23. 6 new teams that could reach playoffs this season

Last season there were a total of five new teams in the NFL’s 12-team playoff format. Given surprisingly slow starts in Philadelphia, Atlanta, Indianapolis and elsewhere this season, that number could easily rise. At the quarter pole, here are six also-rans from 2010 that may be good enough to break into the postseason party in 2011:

News item: 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh is playing the villain again for Detroit Lions fans, saying on a Bay Area radio show earlier this week that his team has been spending the majority of its bye-week prep time on the New Orleans Saints.
